An important figure in the development and dissemination of 20th Century music Robert Craft remains a part America's cultural fabric. Perhaps best known for his New York Times best selling book
Stravinsky: Chronicle of a Friendship, Robert Craft has captured the life and times of the great Igor Stravinsky for all generation to come. Craft
worked for over twenty years as Igor Stravinsky's assistant,
editor, advocate, friend, and biographer. As a leading conductor Craft has conducted
the premieres of works by such luminaries as Alban Berg, Arnold
Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky, Edgard Varese and others.
Craft has made over twenty five recordings for labels
that include Columbia, Sony, KOCH, Music Masters and currently Naxos Records. At the tender age of eighty, Robert
Craft has authored his autobiography
entitled, An Improbable Life: Memoirs, published by Vanderbilt University press (2003).
In the summer of 2000, Craft's book Places - A Travel Guide
For Music And Art Lovers was published by Thames and Hudson
and has received rave reviews from The Washington Post, South
China Morning Post, and The Times Literary Supplement. In January of 2002 The Cannes Music Award Festival presented Craft with their prestigious Life Time Achievement Award and Prix du Disque honors.
